Sculpture monumentale « Esho Funi»
ESHO FUNI

Située en bordure du contre-canal qui longe la digue à Villeneuve-lez-avignon, ESHO FUNI est une sculpture monumentale en pierre, réalisée sur place. Il s’agit d’une initiative entièrement privée du sculpteur Pascal François.
Il a fallu huit mois de travail pour la taille directe de cette œuvre, terminée en mars 2005. Taillée à partir d’un bloc de huit tonnes (230 x 130 x 110 cm) cette sculpture est inspirée de son environnement, d’où son titre que l’on traduit littéralement du japonais par le principe bouddhique de non-dualité entre soi et l’environnement.
Le site de la sculpture, entre le fort Saint-André et le Palais des Papes d’Avignon,43° 58′ 9.74″ N 4° 48′ 41.82″ E, est un lieu de forces dans un contexte historique et culturel très riche. Dans cet endroit de promenade et d’activités sportives, la sculpture est une rencontre, un point de repère unique qui s’offre à tous les regards.
Un guide des « balades et randonnées autour de Villeneuve », édité par l’office de tourisme en 2008, vous invite à découvrir entre autres sites celui de la Plaine de l’Abbaye et sa sculpture, ESHO FUNI.

Erected along the Plaine canal in Villeneuve-lez-avignon, Esho Funi is a monumental outdoor stone sculpture.It was made where it stands.It was Pascal François’s entierely private initiative.
It took eight months and was completed in March 2005.
Carved out of an eight-ton rock (90,5 x 51,2 x 39,4 inch) this sculpture has been inspired by its environment, hence its title : Esho Funi. It’s the literal translation from the Japanese Tan Shoku. It refers to the budhist principle of non-duality of life and its environment.
Located between Fort Saint-André and the Palais des Papes in Avignon, 43° 58′ 9.74″ N 4° 48′ 41.82″ E , the site of the sculpture is rich with historical and cultural forces.
Along this strolling and exercising trail, the sculpture stands, for all to see, as a meeting point and a strange encounter.
The tourism office in Villeneuve-lez-avignon has invited the visitors to go and see Esho Funi.
